Washington DC - Capitol Hill, Washington DC City Info

Visitors who venture beyond the US Capitol, Supreme Court and Library of Congress to explore the charming residential neighborhood directly to the east are surprised by its appealing small-town ambience. Capitol Hill, one of Washington, DC's oldest neighborhoods, is also one of its best preserved. Its streets are still lined with 19th century rowhouses, with grand homes on the state-named avenues and more modest homes on the side streets. Brick sidewalks and meticulously planted small front gardens make for pleasant walking.

The architectural variety is delightful, ranging from Federal-era townhouses and manor houses to pressed-brick rowhouses of the late 19th decorated with turrets and a variety of whimsical decorative elements in the Richardsonian Romanesque and Queen Anne styles. One of the oldest houses in the city, Sewall-Belmont House, at the intersection of Maryland and Constitution Avenues, NE, the headquarters of the National Woman's Party and one time home of suffragist Alice Paul, is open to the public. A number of other impressive homes are on East Capitol Street, the "monumental Avenue" of the L'Enfant Plan, which runs straight from the Capitol and divides the Northeast and Southeast quadrants of the city.

Between the magnificent Beaux-Arts grandeur of Union Station on the northern border, to the historic Navy Yard on the southern riverbank, the Capitol Hill neighborhood is filled with off- the-beaten track historic sites and spaces well worth visiting. The Eastern Market, at 7th and C Streets, SE, built in 1873, is the work of architect Adolph Cluss, who designed the Smithsonian Institution's Arts and Industries Building and many other distinguished post-Civil War structures in the city. It is Washington's last surviving public market and a center of community life, particularly on weekends, when farmers and craftspeople set up stands to sell their wares. Lincoln Park, along East Capitol Street between 11th and 13th Streets, was designated in L'Enfant's Plan as a site for a column that would be the point from which all distances on the continent would be measured. During the Civil War it was the site of a hospital, one of many visited by Walt Whitman. It is now the site of two striking memorials of significance to African American history.

The "Emancipation Statue," depicting Lincoln freeing a slave, was paid for by contributions from freedmen and freedwomen across the country. It was dedicated in 1876. Another statue shows Mary McCleod Bethune, the prominent educator and founder of the National Council of Negro Women, surrounded by school children.
