The Eastern Market, at 7th and C Streets, SE, built in 1873, is the work of architect Adolph Cluss, who designed the Smithsonian Institution's Arts and Industries Building and many other distinguished post-Civil War structures in the city. It is Washington's last surviving public market and a center of community life, particularly on weekends, when farmers and craftspeople set up stands to sell their wares. Lincoln Park, along East Capitol Street between 11th and 13th Streets, was designated in L'Enfant's Plan as a site for a column that would be the point from which all distances on the continent would be measured. During the Civil War it was the site of a hospital, one of many visited by Walt Whitman. It is now the site of two striking memorials of significance to African American history.

The "Emancipation Statue," depicting Lincoln freeing a slave, was paid for by contributions from freedmen and freedwomen across the country. It was dedicated in 1876. Another statue shows Mary McCleod Bethune, the prominent educator and founder of the National Council of Negro Women, surrounded by school children.
